Pioneer grappler takes fourth at Bates

Fort Chiswell secured a 20th-place finish at the Bobby Bates Wrestling Classic held at UVA-Wise and hosted by Wise Central.

At 120 pounds, Jeramia Caviness took fourth place for the Pioneers.

After winning by forfeit in the opening match, Caviness fell by pin to Brayden Owsley of Central Wise.

On the back of the bracket, Caviness had an 8-7 decision over Abingdon’s Gavin Barrett. He then beat another Abingdon wrestler, Max Ferguson, scoring a first-period pin, before falling by pin to John S. Battle’s Todd Nichols. Caviness then pinned Patrick Henry-Roanoke’s Arrogya Pradhan before falling in the third-place match, 5-2, to Rural Retreat’s Gabe Crewey.

Jeramiah Cline took sixth place for the Pioneers at 132 pounds. Cline kicked off his tournament with a pin over James McDaniels of Boyd County. He followed that up pins over Killian Harrison of Floyd Central and Graham’s Ryan Rose before losing by pinfall to Eli Penix of Lee High. Cline then lost 12-8 to Hunter Shelton of Greenville and medically forfeited in his final match.

Brendon Mabry, the Fort’s heavyweight, placed sixth. Mabry pinned Jacob Miller of Lee High to kick things off, and followed that with pins over Cameron Thompson of Boyd County and Casey Mooneyhan of Lee before falling by pin to eventual champ Austin Coe of Marion. On the back of the bracket, Mabry lost 6-0 to Dylan Peck of Johnson Central and fell in overtime to Cole Christian of Ashland Blazer.
