Coach says Bluefield University shuttering wrestling program

Though Bluefield University hasn’t made an announcement, the Rams’ wrestling coach announced on a Facebook post that the school is cutting the wrestling program, saying it was due to the school’s financial hardship.

Jason Waelti has coached at Bluefield for three years, helping the university launch the program.

In his post, Waelti said that in the six seasons, the wrestling program has raised more money than any other sport for four years and says he was told in 2021 that the sport was the most profitable at the university.

The coach also pointed out the ways that wrestlers have given back to the larger community, including staffing the food bank and serving as resident advisers. He also pointed out the program’s successes on the mat, including having two wrestlers ranked No. 6 in the nation.
