Indian Invite produces familiar champs

Bo Anders continued to tear up the competition at 106 pounds.

The Grayson County grappler took first at the Rural Retreat Invitational, besting the home school’s Houston Bear in the finals. Rural Retreat also notched a third-place finish with Justin Walker beating Holston’s Dodger Sluder.

At 113 pounds, Caleb Gibson continued to dominate on the mats, whipping Jacob Spence of Lord Botetourt in the finals. Grayson’s J.T. Porter took fourth, falling in the third-place match to Cole Dipietro of Holston.

At 120 pounds, Caleb Thompson of Grayson – bumped up from his earlier weight of 113 pounds, claimed a title, beating Gabe Crewey of Rural Retreat.

Sergio Rodriguez kept Grayson winning at 126 pounds, with a win over William Rose of Rural Retreat in the finals.

Rural Retreat’s Samont Badziev finished in third, taking a win over Braedon Coalson of Holston.

Rural Retreat was back atop the podium at 138 pounds, as Chaz Penwright won over Lord Botetourt’s Canden Saunders. Grayson’s Ed Scherlinski took third with a win over Holston’s Elijah Berryhill.

At 144 pounds, Hunter Pennington of Rural Retreat took third, beating out Galax’s Braedon Whitaker.

Sam Mello of George Wythe earned a title at 150 pounds with a win over Holston’s Gabe Foster.

Cole Lorenz took first for Grayson County at 157 pounds, beating Cooper Roberts of Lord Botetourt. Lord Botetourt’s Preston Carter finished third, beating George Wythe’s Trenton Hall.

Odell Stroupe of Rural Retreat settled for second at 165 pounds, losing to Lord Botetourt’s T.J. Piluso. Kayden McCluer of Lord Botetourt took third with a win over Gavin Crouse of Galax.

At 175 pounds, Ty Hensley of Lord Botetourt took the title, beating Caden Carico of Galax. Matthew Lineberry of Grayson finished third, whipping Caleb Casey of Holston.

At 190 pounds, Galax’s A.J. Ashworth took a first-place win over Landon King of Grayson County.

Lord Botetourt’s 215 pounder Aaden Thomas took first with a win over Trey Sparks of George Wythe. Edwin Espinoza of Galax finished third, beating Oak Hill’s Dave Torkonoo.

At 285 pounds, Galax’s Bishop Whitaker claimed the title with a win over Byrce Lane of Holston.

Grayson finished second as a team with 84 points. Rural Retreat was third with 82. Galax came in fifth with 53 points and George Wythe sixth with 28. Oak Hill was seventh with four team points.
