The King University Baseball Team (11-25) broke open a 4-4 game with nine runs in the eighth inning to earn a 13-4 victory over Emory & Henry College (7-31) in a clash between border rivals.
The Wasps got on the board first when junior first baseman Jacob Bebber (Taylorsville, N.C.) drove in senior centerfielder Jared Foley (Sparta, N.C.) with a fielder’s choice. E&H made it a 2-0 contest after two on a base knock by senior right fielder Triston Hensley (Covington, Va.).
In the top of the third, King tied things up on a two-run home run by Nathan Borchardt. Emory & Henry went back ahead, 3-2, in the bottom of the frame on a single through the left side by sophomore catcher Garrison Bullock (Concord, N.C.).
A pair of runs by the Tornado in the fourth saw another lead change as Kale Richardson tallied an infield hit. The Wasps made it a 4-4 contest when fifth-year second baseman Noah Mazza (Plainfield, Ill.) singled through the left side to drive in senior shortstop Kolby Anderson (King William, Va.).
After three scoreless innings, King broke the game open with nine runs in the eighth for a lead. Borchard had a three-run double while Andrew Bryant smoked a three-run home run over the centerfield wall to highlight the frame. E&H was unable to generate any additional offense in their final two trips to the plate as the final score would go down as 13-4 in favor of the visitors.
King’s Corbin Dickenson earned the victory, pitching one scoreless inning in relief. Carlton Grant allowed three runs on five hits with four strikeouts for the Tornado as he went the first three frames.
E&H called upon 10 different pitchers on the afternoon, six of whom pitched scoreless innings. Junior Jaden Jones (Chicago, Ill.) ended up taking the loss, allowing two runs on one hit and a walk in 1.1 innings of work.
