Maroon boys take second at track meet

The George Wythe boys finished second at Saturday’s Judy Thomas Invitational track and field meet, piling up 70 points. Chilhowie was a hair behind, finishing third with 66 points. Rural Retreat collected 60 points to the put the Indians in fourth. Northwood claimed 12th with 15 team points.

Senior Chris Sizemore returned to Rural Retreat with a pair of golds around his neck.

Sizemore jumped to first in the high jump, clearing a 5-foot, 10-inch bar. Josh Tuell of Chilhowie took second, clearing 5 feet, 6 inches. Davion Tillison of George Wythe cleared 5 feet, 6 inches to earn fifth, and a 5-foot jump put Chilhowie’s Hunter Hall in 10th place.

Sizemore nabbed his second gold in the long jump, leaping 20 feet, 4 inches. Tillison took second, clearing a 20-foot, 0.5-inch gap. Jonathan Gilley of Chilhowie landed a 19-foot, 9.5-inch jump to take third. Tuell finished seventh, hitting 19 feet. Rural Retreat’s Lachen Streeby cleared 18 feet, 3.5 inches to take 11th place. In 12th, hitting 18 feet, 3 inches, was George Wythe’s Terry Morgan. Aaron Mitchell of Northwood hit 17th with a 16-foot, 7.5-inch jump. Brock Smelser of George Wythe leapt 16 feet, 5.5 inches for 18th place, and Jacob Crouse of Rural Retreat secured 25th place with a 14-foot, 10.5-inch jump. Northwood’s Dakota Testerman was 28th, clearing 14 feet, 4inches.

Tillison claimed gold in the triple jump, clearing 43 feet, 5 inches. Gilley leapt 40 feet, 4 inches to earn second. Sizemore was third with a 40-foot, 1-inch jump. In fourth, Tuell landed at 39 feet, 9 inches. Hall jumped 35 feet, 5 inches for 11th place.

Gilley raced to first in the 400-meter dash, stopping the clock at 51.23. Morgan of George Wythe grabbed a bronze with a 53.07 finish. Sizemore claimed fourth, clocking in at 53.21. In ninth place, Hall stopped the clock at 57.68. Crouse of Rural Retreat nabbed 12th place with a time of 57.93. Northwood’s Aaron Mitchell took 16th, finishing at 59.38. Carter Kegley of George Wythe followed in 17th, posting a time of 59.48. Chilhowie’s Gabino Silverio raced to 18th with a time of 59.49. In 19th, Rural Retreat’s Gatlin Hight stopped the clock at 59.87.

Streeby finished ahead of the pack in the 300-meter hurdles, posting a time of 45.21. Chase Lewis of Chilhowie stopped the clock at 47.20, earning fourth. George Wythe’s Nathan Swatsky finished sixth, crossing the finish line at 51.35.

George Wythe’s boys took first in the 100-meter relay, clocking in at 2:14.33.2. Rural Retreat’s team of Crouse, Jacob Howard, Cody Duncan and Micah Hamman finished sixth with a time of 2:39.23.

The Maroon team of Oscar Montgomery, Nathan Swatsky, Brett Buchanan and Kade Minton clinched first with a 9:15.59 time in the 4×800-meter relay. Cody Harrington, Owen Chatterton, Howard and Duncan gave Rural Retreat a fourth-place effort with a time of 11:54.31.

The Chilhowie foursome of Gilley, Tuell, Lewis and Hall grabbed second in the 4×100 meter relay, posting a time of 46.30. George Wythe’s team of Morgan, Justin Felts, Smelser and Tillison clocked in at 46.95, earning fourth. The Rural Retreat crew of Sizemore, Hight, Crouse and Streeby took fifth with a time of 47.28.

Chilhowie’s Gilley, Tuell, Gabino Silverio and Hall took second in the 4×400-meter relay, finishing in 3:5.66.

In the 800-meter run, Northwood’s Ethan Graber took third, clocking in at 2:18.63. Brett Buchanan of George Wythe raced to eighth, finishing in 2:26.07. Dylan Stevenson of Chilhowie posted a 2:32.24 finish for 10th place. In 11th, George Wythe’s Oscar Montgomery clocked in at 2:33.28. Mason Lee of Chilhowie took 14th, stopping the clock at 2:36.04.

George Wythe’s Jack Formato finished third in the 110-meter hurdles, clocking in at 22.18.

Northwood’s Justin Zhang claimed fourth in the shot put, tossing for 37 feet, 10 inches. Thomas Smith of George Wythe was 11th with a 33-foot, 10-inch put. Silverio finished 15th, hitting 30 feet, 4 inches. Fellow Warriors Jacob Dorn and Cole Miller were 18th and 19th, respectively. Dorn hit 28 feet, 9.5 inches and Miller 28 feet, 6 inches. In 20th, Dakota Woods of Northwood tossed for 28 feet, 3-inches. A 27-foot, 1.5-inch effort from Dalton Thomas earned the Panther 22nd. George Wythe’s Josh Russell and Jaylin Sayles finished in 23rd and 24th, respectively. Russell tossed for 27 feet, 1 inch and Sayles 26 feet, 1 inch. George Wythe’s Zach Neal finished in 26th, tossing for 25 feet.

Zhang took fifth in the discus with a 108-foot, 9.5-inch throw. Silverio was eighth, tossing for 91 feet, 6 inches. In ninth place, Smith of George Wythe hit 90 feet, 5.5 inches. Nate Taylor of Chilhowie claimed 10th with a 90-foot, 0.5-inch effort. In 14th, Sayles threw for 78 feet, 9 inches for the Maroons. George Wythe’s Russell was 17th and Bryce Gregory finished in 19th. Russell hit 76 feet, 3.5 inches and Gregory 66 feet, 10 inches. Northwood’s Woods hit 60 feet, 10.5 inches, good for 23rd. Blake Pappas of Chilhowie finished with a 60-foot, 8-inch throw, good for 24th. Thomas of Northwood took 25th with a 58-foot, 5.5-inch effort. George Wythe’s Zach Neal tossed for 56 feet, 7.5 inches to earn 26th.

George Wythe’s Minton took fifth in the 1600-meter run, finishing in 4:56.34. Blevins of Chilhowie clocked in at 5:02.52, good for sixth. Buchanan claimed ninth, posting a time of 5:16.40. In 11th, GW’s Montgomery clocked in at 5:29.27. Connor Murphy of Chilhowie crossed the finish line at 5:31.71, earning 13th. Fellow Warrior Lee clocked in at 5:36.91, good for 16th. Woods’ 5:44.07, gave the Northwood runner 17th. Duncan of Rural Retreat finished in 20th place, posting a time of 6:34.39. Chatterton finished in 6:54.19 to take 22nd. His teammate, Harrington, finished in 23rd, clocking in at 7:59.23.

Streeby nabbed sixth in the 100-meter dash, posting a 12.11 finish. Felts came in 10th with a 12.45 run. Smelser was 13th, stopping the watches at 12.94. Formato clocked in at 12.96, good for 14th. In 18th was Testerman, finishing in 14.08.

Chilhowie’s Blevins earned seventh in the 3200-meter run, stopping the clock at 10:59.53. Mason Mabry of George Wythe finished in 15.23.60 to take ninth. Fellow Maroon Durstan Carder earned 10th with a time of 15:27.91.
