Minnis Haynes Dillow

Minnis Haynes Dillow, 90, died Friday, April 28, 2023, at NHC Healthcare in Bristol, Virginia.

Dillow was born in Bland County on Jan. 2, 1933. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and worked many years as a truck driver.

He is preceded in death by his parents, several brothers and sisters, and a son Charles Dane Dillow.

Dillow is survived by his wife of 32 years Anita B. Dillow; three children Kim Dillow, Steve Dillow and wife, Peggy, and Susan Blevins; brother Ralph Dillow; stepdaughter Lisa Blevins and husband, Eric; several grandchildren to include Logan Blevins and Sarah Dillow, great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Jerry R. Farmer

Jerry R. Farmer, 75, died Wednesday April 26, 2023, at his home in Marion.

Farmer was born in Smyth County to the late Burton and Angie Farmer and was preceded in death by his wife, Irene “Pepper” Farmer; son, Ray Williams Peppers; brothers, Ralph Farmer and Lincoln Farmer.  Farmer was a true American patriot having served in the US Army in Vietnam. He received a purple heart and was a member of the Francis Marion VFW Post 4667.  Farmer was very generous man who never met a stranger and was always willing to help anyone.  He loved the outdoors and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Retta Thweatt Farmer; sons Chris Farmer and wife, Sarah, and Steve Peppers; grandchildren, Brittney Peppers, Shaly Farmer, Brandon Dancy and Kyle Dancy; several great-grandchildren;  brothers, Johnny Farmer and wife, Joan, and Gene Farmer and wife, Madelyn; stepson, Chris Golliher; special friends, David “Hippy” Goodpasture, Brandon “V-Cut” Hall, little Donnie Ward, David Dunford and his hospice nurse, Barbara “Gabby” Smith.

Bridgett Ann Gallagher

Bridgett Ann Gallagher, 66, died Saturday, April 29, 2023, at Valley Healthcare Center in Chilhowie.

Gallagher was born Sept. 21, 1956, to the late Ray Brown and Dixie Stephens. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Ronald Helton.

She is survived by her boyfriend Kevin Hodge; four children, Joey Knox, Robert Knox Sr., Brian Miller and Francine Champlain; grandchildren Robert Knox Jr., Alexa Chesney, Skylar Faircloth, Dorothy Hawkins and Carter Hawkins; great-grandchildren Braydon, Alanna, and Callan; special family friends Brenda and Jimmy Brown, Derek Brown, Dustin Brown, Ashley Brown, Jonathan Offered, and Susan Palmer Reid; several brothers and sisters, and her special pet companion Penny.

Dwayne Marcellous “Mark” Graham

Dwayne Marcellous “Mark” Graham, 60, died Sunday, April 30, 2023, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Graham was an easy person to like. He worked hard keeping homes, his yard and other projects always in tip-top shape. When he wasn’t working, he loved to take it easy. He was a loving brother and friend who never met a stranger. His kind and gentle way will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Rosemarie G. Boyd; brother, Raphael Lynn “Buddy” Graham; grandmother, Roslyn S. Graham; and grandfather, Harry A. Graham, II.

Graham is survived by two sisters, Roslyn E. Graham, and Jamie “Patty” Graham-Walker and husband, David, all of Roanoke; brother, Christopher T. “Chris” Graham of Bristol, Virginia; the children of his heart, Carrie, Laura, Chelsea and Amber; six grandchildren of his heart; nieces and nephews, Teddy “TJ” Johnson, Shannon Graham, McKenzie “Dusty” Hoffman, Cierra Graham and Kiera Graham; and best friend, Johnny Bufford of Marion.

The family will receive friends Saturday, May 6, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Seaver Brown Chapel, 237 East Main Street, Marion. Funeral services will begin at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Lance Turner officiating. Burial will be private at Round Hill Cemetery, Marion.

Mark Wayne Groseclose

Mark Wayne Groseclose, 63, of Speedwell died Thursday, April 27, 2023.

He is preceded in death by his father, Donald Lester Moore Groseclose Sr., and his younger brother Donald Lester Moore Groseclose Jr.

He is survived by his mother, Evelyne B. Groseclose; son, R. Shane Groseclose; daughter, Kayla G. Taylor (Dedrick Taylor); grandchildren, Gage, Logan, Elli, and Madison; special relatives Jessica Stewart (Brandon White) and Nathan Meadows; and his dog Cora Lee.

Groseclose was a simple man. He loved great music, hanging with his friends, long drives on the back roads, and Cowboys Football. He danced to the beat of his own drum, and he loved the Lord. He waited a long time for this reunion in the sky.

Burial was at the Speedwell United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Greta “G-G” Trivitt Grubb

Greta “G-G” Trivitt Grubb, 55, died Monday, April 24, 2023.

She was born June 20, 1967 in Wytheville. She was a graduate of Clinch Valley College of the University Virginia in 1990, where she also played on the women’s basketball team. Grubb was employed by Appalachian Power for more than 27 years. She loved playing golf with her friends and always kept up with college sports. She was a proud Virginia Tech Hokie fan. Grubb always took time to enjoy the little things in life, fishing, hunting, and taking rides in her Jeep. Some of her favorite places to be were on the New River, Claytor Lake, The Cove at “Her Oak Tree”, Lane Stadium, The Wytheville Country Club, and Big Walker Towers. Most importantly she was a wonderful dedicated mother who loved her children more than anything.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Joyce Jones Trivitt and father, James Trivitt; grandparents, Elmer and Lura Trivitt, and Ellis “Blackeye” and Stella Jones.

She is survived by her son, Kenneth Tyler Blaine Grubb and wife, Angel, of Rural Retreat; daughter, Kenna Taylor Henderson and husband, Logan, of Saltville; granddaughter, Presley Kate Grubb; sister, Kathy T. Vaught of Rural Retreat; niece, Michelle McFarlane and husband, Chad, of Rural Retreat; great-nieces, Taylor and Ryleigh; great-nephew, Gage; sister-in-law, Dana Woods and husband, Chuck, of Wytheville; special brother, Jeremy Shelton of Wytheville; special companion Onyx; and a very special circle of close friends; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Following her wishes, her remains will be spread at some of her favorite places.

Emily Josephine Snider Hunley

Emily Josephine Snider Hunley of Rural Retreat died Sunday April 30, 2023.

Hunley was born Feb. 5, 1939, to Staley Eugene Snider and Laura Campbell Snider. She was the only sibling to graduate from high school. She graduated from Marion High School in 1958.

She worked for 40+ years for Kroger, from where she retired. Hunley was a marvelous cook. She loved entertaining and preparing food for her family.

Hunley was an accomplished artist and some of her artwork can be seen in published works by her cousin, Sally Campbell Repass. She loved planting and maintaining her flower gardens. In her earlier years, Hunley enjoyed family-involved activities, such as softball, horse shows, volleyball and bocci ball games, as well as Mexican Train Dominoes and Uno card games. She always held a special place in her heart for her house, Ginger.

In July  1976, she  married the love of her life, Robert “Bob” Hunley. They shared 46 years of marriage. Hunley was a life-long caretaker and willingly took on that role for her father, both sisters, brother-in-law, and husband when it was necessary. She never complained for the countless sacrifices she made caring for her loved ones. She was preceded in death by her parents, one infant sister during childbirth; a brother, William (Buster) Snider (Thelma); twin sister, Irene Snider Pruitt (Clyde); sister, Sallie Haulsee and infant great niece Gindy Snider. She was also preceded by bother-in-law Jack Hunley (Clenda); sister-in-law, Mary Lee Mabe (Franklin) and a nephew, Craig Mabe.

Hunley is survived by her husband of 46 years, Bob Hunley; one brother, John (Pap) Snider (Nancy); sister- in-law, Linda (Gary) Green; nephews, Micheal Snider; Lonnie (Renee) Snider; Angela Snider Wilson; Kurt Pruitt; Johnnie (Alice) Snider; Debbie Snider Boone; Shane (Becky) Snider; Mike (Kim) Mabe; Jamie (Lisa) Mabe; Lorrie (Jeff) Malcolm, Wendy (Lee) Williams and Heather (Nick) Kapranos; and several great nieces and nephews.

A special thank you to Kelly Gotham, Cassie Clyburn and Wythe Hospice of Southwest Virginia for their compassion, support and care for Josie and the family during the last days of her life’s journey.

Funeral service will be held 3 P.M. Thursday, May 4, at West End Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Natalie Drummond with interment to follow in West End Cemetery. Margaret Katherine Bailey Lee

Margaret Katherine Bailey Lee, 76, of Wytheville died Monday April 24, 2023.

Born Aug. 17, 1946, in Northumberland County, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late James Clinton and Mabel Irene Ramey Yerby.

She loved the Wytheville Training School and Cultural Center where she served as president for many years. She started the Wytheville Women in Touch Ministry. She graduated from Morris Town College and attended Tennessee State. She enjoyed singing with the choir in the Wythe County area. She loved to cook for everyone.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by, brother James Yerby, sisters Betty Jo Johnson and Jane Jones.

Survivors include her husband, James Lee of Wytheville; one son, Kendall Bailey and wife, Terry Bailey, of Richmond; Paulette Bailey Turpin of Wytheville; grandchildren Jonathan Turpin and wife, Meme, of Charleston, South Carolina, Jared Bailey of Bristol, Tennessee, Kendra Turpin of Wytheville, Amy Campbell Clark and husband, Scott, of Charlotte, North Carolina, Lisa Benners and husband, T.J., of Princeton, West Virginia; and sisters Patricia Yerby, Angela Yerby, Sheila Turner, Loretta Yerby and Lorraine Yerby.

Memorial services will be conducted Saturday, May 6, at 1 p.m. at Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville, with the Rev. Rachel Blankenship officiating.  Friends may call Saturday, May 6, from noon to 1 p.m. at Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville.

Charles Herbert “Wick” Lefler

Charles Herbert “Wick” Lefler, 81, died Saturday, April 29, 2023, at Mt. Rogers Wythe House in Wytheville.

Lefler was born in Smyth County to the late Stuart and Laura Leonard Lefler. Along with his parents, he is also preceded in death by a son Marty Lefler; grandson Deacon Ray; brothers Alvin Leonard, Sonny Lefler, David Lefler, James Lefler, Louis Lefler, and Ray Lefler; sisters Betty Hart, Mildred Harris, and Virginia Firestone. Lefler worked many years for Lefler Enterprises working on the interstate all over the county and surrounding counties. He was an avid sports fan, especially watching the New York Yankees.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Lefler; children Marta Ray and husband T.A, Mickey Lefler and wife, Rachel, and Dusty Lefler; grandchildren Tristen Ray, Abigail Ray, Zoey Lefler and Gavin Lefler; honorary daughter Tina Wilson; special friend Tommy Overbay; and several nieces and nephews.

Shirley Ann “Bobbie” Louthen Mabe

Shirley Ann “Bobbie” Louthen Mabe, 87, died Wednesday, April 26, 2023, at Valley Health Care Center, Chilhowie.

Mabe was the essence of good. She was a loving mother, grandmother and friend who enjoyed being with her family more than anything. Bobbie loved reading her Bible. She had read it through many times. She loved church and playing the piano, and helping anyone who needed her. She will be missed by her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin L. Mabe; parents, Joseph and Annie Louthen; brothers, Sherman, Tony, Bill and Nacy Louthen; sister, Christine Baker.

Mabe is survived by her daughter, Mevie Smith; son, C.A. “Tony” Mabe, all of Marion; sisters, Vada Kirby of Marion and Katherine Louise Louthen of Chilhowie; brother, Campbell Louthen and wife, Hazel, of Bristol, Tennessee; granddaughter, Sarah Jones; great-grandchildren, Brynn Jones and Jaxxon Crawley; and several nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Rose Lawn Cemetery, Marion.

Brenda Sue “Tootle” Mitchell

Brenda Sue “Tootle” Mitchell, 70, died Thursday, April 27, 2023, at home.

Mitchell loved her family – she was a loving wife, sister, mom, and mamaw Mitchell. You’d always catch her playing with her cell phone, but her passion was helping people. She really enjoyed being a nurse. Her family will miss her, but is comforted to know she is in Heaven today.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Mitchell; parents, James and Cleo Reynolds; sisters, Faye Nunley and Doris Wolfe; brothers, David Reynolds, Billy Reynolds, and Mike Reynolds.

Mitchell is survived by her daughters, Lisa Sue Harris (Mike), of Alabama, Danielle Thompson (Jason Warren); sons, Richard Jerry Hicks, Chris Mitchell (Tricia); brother, Roger Reynolds (Wanda), all of Abingdon; 14 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jeanna Sue Porter

Jeanna Sue Porter died at 9 a.m. on April 25, 2023. She was surrounded by her family, who encouraged her in song as she was greeted by her Savior.

Porter has always been a source of comfort, encouragement, and godly wisdom to her family and friends. She has also been such an encouragement to so many children through the years as she taught Sunday school and Bible Bowl. She had a passion for education, in faith and in academics, as she taught her kids in home education and others at church. Everyone who met Porter, whether for a day or for a lifetime, could feel the love she had for everyone, and the love she had for God and for his Word. No one could walk away from her without being impacted in some way.

Survivors include her husband, Bill Porter; son and daughter-in-love Aric and Allison Porter, Alex Porter; mother and father Karen and Robert Taylor; sister and brother-in-love Crystal and Acy Collins, nephews Corbet and Christian Collins, as well as so many cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, family in-law-and-love, friends and family in the Lord, as well as the many students that have held a special place in her heart.

Michael Shaine Porter

Michael Shaine Porter, 53, of Rural Retreat died Saturday, April 29, 2023.

Porter was a loving husband, son, brother, uncle and friend.

Porter is preceded in death by his father, Jimmie Porter, Uncle, Paul Lephew, Grandparents, Paul and Willie Lephew, Dora Porter.

He is survived by his wife, Melody Robbins Porter; his mother, Suzetta Porter; brothers, James Porter, Todd and Tammy Porter; special niece, Montana and Chad Arnold along with their children, Lucas, Hazel and Liam; uncle, Sam Lephew; “brother” Sam and Samantha Lephew, along with their kids, Fynlee, Raegan and Taylynn; father-in-law, Carl Robbins and mother-in-law, Joyce Robbins; brother-in-law, Enos Jones and Lisa and Jacob; sister-in-law, Missy and Kelly Stamper; niece, Brittany and Sean Catron, along with their son, Creed; Nephew, Matt Jones, Brinkley; nephew, Ryan, Whitney Stamper, along with Mayson, Jackson, and Emmerson; Niece, Kelsey Stamper and Josh, along with Owen, Everleigh Niece, Kaylee Stamper; and extended family and many friends.

His passions included riding his motorcycle, hunting and fishing. He also loved gardening and canning vegetables with his wife, Melody. He was an avid “griller” of sorts, grilling anything that would fit on the grill. He and his brother, James, both enjoy feeding the masses.

He made friends easily despite his quiet demeanor. He had shifted gears in the past few years as he gave his life to the Lord and was a faithful member of Life Changers Christian Center, where he was excited to start serving in ministry on April 30.

He loved his church family and always enjoyed talking about, hunting, fishing and daily life with the guys. He loved to pick and that made for good conversation among his friends and family. He was employed by Coperian in Wytheville, where he was passionate about his job and had many friends in production as well as management.

He leaves behind family, friends and many great memories for them to reflect on until they see him again.

Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 3, at Life Changers Christian Center with Rev. Todd and Tammy Porter officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until service time.

Graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Zion Church Cemetery in Crawfish.

Treasie Pridemore Crigger Probert

Treasie Pridemore Crigger Probert, 83, of Wytheville, died at home on Monday, May 1, 2023. 

She was born in Smyth County on Aug. 25, 1941.

She was preceded in death by her parents Beulah Hall and Paul Pridemore Sr.; husband, Paul Probert; brothers Andy and Grover Pridemore; and sisters Shirley Pickle and Brenda Hash.

She is survived by sons Del (Polly) Crigger of Wytheville and Daniel (Tracey) Crigger of Max Meadows; daughters Drusilla Parks of Sugar Grove, Debbie Crigger (Billy Thompson) of Ivanhoe and Dreamma (John) Danes of Diamond, Ohio; sister Pauline Gordon of Rural Retreat; brothers James (Libby) Pridemore of Wytheville, and Paul Pridemore Jr. of Rural Retreat; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. 

Per her request no formal services will be conducted. The family suggests that those who wish make donations to Kazim Shrine Mobile Nobles 555 Peppers Ferry Rd, Wytheville, VA 24382.

Beulah “Mickey” Quesenberry

Beulah “Mickey” Quesenberry, 80, of Hillsville died Sunday, April 30, 2023.

She was born Jan. 24, 1943, in Pulaski, daughter of the late Frank Worrell and Mary Sue Bowman Worrell. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Clinton “T-Body” Marshall; an infant son; a daughter, Brenda Ann Marshall; two brothers, Wayne S. Worrell and Franklin “Pete” Worrell; two sisters, Clara Estelle Lewis and Nancy Sue Hopkins.

Survivors include her husband, Gary Edgar Quesenberry; three daughters, Carolyn Marshall Phillips of Hillsville, Rebecca Lynn Marshall of Hiwassee and Sharon Kaye Brown of Hillsville; son, Clinton Eugene Marshall of Barren Springs; stepchildren, Timmy Quesenberry and Leigh and Ronnie Amburn; sister, Brenda Worrell of Richmond; brother, Johnny Worrell of Pulaski; special grandson, Garry Wayne Marshall; 13 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday, May 6, at Reese Funeral Home with the Revs. R.J. Buttrey and Carl Foster officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before service time at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Smith-Lindsey Cemetery in Sylvatus.

Marie Hamm Russell

Marie Hamm Russell, 67, died Wednesday April 26, 2023 at her home in Marion.

Russell was born in Smyth County to the late Tom Hamm and Louise Vannoy Hamm Thomas and was preceded in death by her husband Allen Russell; her son David Russell; sister, Carol Graczyk; brother, Jimmy Hamm. Marie worked in rental property for many years owning and renting in the community.  She had a heart of gold, loved life and would do anything for anybody. She will be missed by her family and many friends.

Survivors include her grandson, David Allen “JR” Russell; sisters, Becky Dunn, Nancy Sharpe-Lewis; brothers, Toby Hamm, Chuck Hamm, Randy Hamm; nieces Karen Sharpe Pharis and Holly Sharpe Snyder; and special friends, Janice and Darryl Cale.

Nancy Phillippi Scott

Nancy Phillippi Scott, 91, died April 29, 2023. 

A Wytheville native, she was a daughter of the late James Carl Phillippi Sr. and his wife, Mary Sue Clippard Phillippi.  Scott was married 68 years to a fellow Wytheville native, Donald Scott.

She graduated from Wytheville High School as the salutatorian in the Class of 1949.  She attended Radford College, graduating with three Bachelor’s degrees.  Later, she received a Master’s degree from VPI&SU.  Scott returned to the Wythe County school system, this time as a teacher.  She taught 30 years in the county schools.  Even after retirement, She continued to tutor students.

Until ill health limited her activities, Scott played the piano and organ in church and also sang in several choirs, primarily her church choir and the Wytheville Community choir.  Throughout her life, she was active in several musical, civic and professional organizations.  She volunteered in the town’s museums and library systems.  She was also an active member of her church for many years.

Scott is preceded in death by four sisters, a brother, and by her son Thomas Michael Scott. 

She is survived by her husband; daughter Teresa and son-in-law Stan; two grandchildren and their spouses; and a great-grandchild.

Otis Hurbert Shortt

Otis Hurbert Shortt of Claypool Hill died April 30, 2023, at Hospice House in Bristol, Tennessee.

Shortt was born March 7, 1936, to the late Tom Short and Bertha Palmer Short of Short’s Gap. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his sons, Joseph and Randy Shortt; sisters, Truela and Effie Short, Ethel White and Maudie Bronson; brothers. Ballard, Harold, R.B and Walter Short.

Survivors include his soulmate, Vella Ray of the home; daughters Debbie Williams of Bristow, Virginia, Debbie Lynn Shortt of Lynchburg, Virginia; Bertha Showalter of Dillwyn, Virginia, and Jennifer Shortt of Newport News, Virginia; his son Tim (Crystal) Alley of Bristol, Virginia; sisters Dorthy Keene of Lebanon and Jean Thomas of Richlands; brothers Tommy Shortt and Linda of Richlands and Jason and Joyce Short of Claypool Hill; 14 grandchild, including his dedicated Linsey Lee of Richlands; nine great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousin; and special friend and interpreter, Shirley Blake of Bristol, Virginia.

Due to a childhood disease at 5, Shortt was left a deaf mute. He graduated from Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind in Staunton, Virginia. Determined not to work in his father’s coal mining business, he set out for Lynchburg where he took a job with Weyerhaeuser. He soon learned to operate all of the machinery that ensured him a job for 48 years. After his retirement, Shortt returned to Southwest Virginia and settled into the Claypool Hill community.

Arnold H. Sims, 60, died Sunday, April 30, 2023 at his home in Marion.

Barbara Ann Trivett

Barbara Ann Trivett, 84, died Tuesday, April 25, 2023, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.

Trivett was born in Konnarock to the late Lillard andClyde Miller Trivett on Dec. 15, 1938. She is also preceded in death by two daughters Patty Jean Trivett and Kathy Ann Burns; love of her life Garland Lowe; brothers Gene and Bill Trivett; son-in-law Ronnie Blevins; brother-in-law Henry Farmer; and sisters-in-law Zola and Louise Trivett.

She is survived by her two daughters Rhonda Roop, and Sherry Smith Hietala and husband, Mark; son-in-law Ronald Burns; sister Elizabeth Farmer; brothers John Trivett and wife, Diane, Darrell Trivett and wife, Juanita, Ted Trivett and Teresa, and Gerald Trivett; grandchildren Mark Blevins and wife, Jess, Carrie Fields and husband, Tim, Shauna Reynolds and husband, Jonathan, Dakota Smith, Kayla Lowe, Emily Burns, Meagan Burns and Ronald Blevins; great-grandchildren Max, Colt, Tripp, Skyler, Case, Paisley, Miles, Skylyn, Cheyenne, Logan; numerous nieces and nephews; and and special friends Sue Barr and Ivery Testerman.

Burial was at Azen Church Cemetery in Konnarock.
