Warriors, Canes, Indians compete at regional track meet

Chilhowie’s girls led Smyth County runners at the Region D indoor track tournament held over the weekend in Salem, with the Warriors staking out a third-place finish. Marion’s girls came in sixth.

Marion’s girls came in sixth.

The Warrior boys finished in sixth, while Marion notched a 14th place finish.

Chilhowie senior Tess Somervell brought home the most hardware, nabbing a pair of silvers and a bronze.

Somervell was second in the girls 1000-meter run, stopping the clock at 3:25.76. She was second, too, in the 1600-meter run, posting a time of 6:04.60. Somervell was third in the pole vault, clearing 7 feet.

Fellow Warrior Audrey Gilley also had a second-place finish at the tournament, taking the silver spot in the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:30.70. Gilley finished fourth in the pole vault, clearing a 6-foot bar, and ninth in the triple jump with a 30-foot, 1.5-inch leap. Gilley took 10th in the long jump, clearing 14 feet, 0.5 inches.

Marion’s Ruby Hoerter also hauled home a silver, finishing second in the 3200-meter run. The junior clocked in at 14:00.48.

Raegan Cox, a Marion Senior senior, took second in the high jump, leaping over a 4-foot, 10-inch bar. Cox also secured a bronze in the triple jump, clearing 32 feet, 7.25 inches. Marion junior Brooke Langston was fourth in the high jump, clearing 4 feet, 8 inches. In the long jump, Cox earned eighth, clearing 14 feet, 4.75 inches.

Langston took sixth in the triple jump, cearling 31 feet, 8.25 inches. Langston led the local field in the long jump with a 16-foot effort, good for fourth place. Laken Foutz of Marion leapt to seventh with a 14-foot, 8.75-inch effort.

Kaymen Atwell, a senior at Chilhowie finished 13th in the long jump, clearing 13 feet, 10.5 inches. Atwell’s 28-foot, 4-inch effort in the triple jump earned her 10th place.

Atwell was sixth in the 55-meter dash, finishing in 7.97. Ava Smith of Marion took seventh in the 55 meters, finishing in 8.02. Langston claimed the eighth spot with an 8.08 finish. Foutz earned 10th with an 8.39 run.

Atwell took 10th in the 300-meter dash, finishing in 48.87. In 11th, Marion’s Anna Winebarger clocked in at 48.95. Mady Heath of Chilhowie earned 13th with a 49.89 run.

In the 500-meter dash, Marion’s Winebarger, a senior, finished in fourth place, stopping the watch at 1:35.45.

Sophomore Kendyl Gross of Chilhowie finished sixth in the 1000-meter run, finishing in 3:46.09.

Raegan Burchett, a senior at Marion, took eighth in the shot put with a 25-foot, 8-inch toss. Madison Gwinn, a sophomore from Chilhowie, earned 19th, throwing for 20 feet, 1 inch.

Chilhowie took gold in the 4×400 relay, clocking in at 4:3039. The Warrior girls finished second in the 4×200 with a time of 1:56.25.

The highest finish for the boys was a fourth-place shot put final with Chilhowie sophomore Jackson Holbrook earning the spot thanks to a 42-foot, 6.5-inch toss. Marion freshman Jacob Mooney nabbed fifth with a 40-foot, 9-inch put. Miles Harrington, a senior Hurricane, finished in ninth, clearing 36 feet, 5.5 inches. Chilhowie’s Luke Montgomery earned 18th with a 30-foot, 10.5-inch effort, and Caleb Cook, also from Chilhowie, finished in 19th, clearing 30 feet, 9 inches.

Dawson Tuell, a junior from Chilhowie, finished fifth in the boys triple jump, clearing 35 feet, 6.5 inches. Jake Russell hit the 33-foot, 10.25-inch mark, earning seventh place.

Tuell was sixth in the 300-meter dash, finishing in 39.98. Russell clocked in at 41.57, good for 11th place. Isaac George of Marion finished in 42.39, earning 13th. Martin Widener of Chilhowie clocked in at 45.75, taking 17th. Angel Wheatley’s time of 48.63 gave the Marion sophomore 23rd place.

Tuell’s 7.26 finish in the 55-meter dash was good for 13th place. Marion’s Isaac George and Miles Harrington tied for 23rd with 7.45 runs. Connor Bogle of Chilhowie finished in 7.78, earning 29th place, while Terrence Armstrong of Marion took 31st with a 7.90 finish. Nate Thomas of Chilhowie clocked in at 8.56, good for 34th.

Marion junior Elijah Wheatley finished in fifth place in the 500-meter dash, clocking in at 1:15.71. Martin Widener and Nate Thomas, Chilhowie juniors, finished in 11th and 13th, respectively. Widener clocked in at 1:25.93 and Thomas at 1:28.43. Angel Wheatley, a sophomore from Marion, finished in 17th with a time of 1:33.12. Andrew Owens, a Marion freshman, clocked in at 1:38.99, good for the 20th spot.

Elijah Wheatley finished sixth in the 1000-meter run, posting a 3:10.49 time. Chilhowie junior J.T. Moore earned seventh with a 3:17.07 finish. Lucas Hubble, a junior Warrior, was ninth, clocking in at 3:23.42.

Hubble turned in a sixth-place finish in the 1600-meter run, stopping the clock at 5:11.92. Behind him in seventh was Marion’s Alex Armbrister, finishing in 5:13.30. Mason Lee of Chilhowie finished in 5:31.63, good for 10th, and Bryson Kelly of Chilhowie earned 12th with a time of 5:43.49. Jonathan Barbrow of Marion raced to a 6:08.44 finish, earning 20th place. In 22nd, Colin Creggar of Marion stopped the clock at 6:17.23.

Jake Russell, a junior from Chilhowie, finished sixth in the long jump, clearing 18 feet, 7 inches. Dawson Tuell took 19th with a 15-foot, 4-inch leap.

Chilhowie sophomore Bryson Kelly took ninth in the 3200-meter run, posting a time of 12:59.80.

The Warrior boys finished fifth in the 4×400 relay, clocking in at 3:59.52. in the 4×200, the Warriors finished in 1:52.37, earning ninth.
