Grayson claims second at state wrestling tournament

Bo Anders was one of the Blue Devils’ two state champs, rolling to a gold at 106 pounds.

Anders kicked off his tournament with a pin over Calvin Hudson of King and Queen Central School. In the semifinals, Anders took a 1-0 decision over Rural Retreat’s Houston Bear.

In the finals, Anders, who was coached by his older brother Cole Anders, took out Honaker’s Hunter Dye 4-2.

Sergio Rodriguez claimed the other crown for Grayson, winning it all at 126 pounds.

Rodriguez pinned Reegan McGee of Northampton in the first period and then stung Chilhowie’s Nate Widener with a 5-1 loss in the semifinals. In the fight for first, Rodriguez outlasted Grundy’s Blake Broyles, 11-5.

At 157 pounds, Cole Lorenz didn’t have as good a luck with Grundy.

After Lorenze pinned Eastside’s Steve Moore and Buffalo Gap’s Dalton Ashley, both in the second period, Lorenz dropped a 5-3 decision to Grundy’s Carson Deel in the finals.

At 120 pounds, Caleb Thompson also faced some bad luck with the Golden Wave.

Thompson kicked off his tournament with a pin over Northumberland’s Braeden Cummings.

In the semifinals, Thompson dropped a 3-2 decision in ultimate tie-breaker overtime to Grundy’s Talen Hall. On the back of the bracket, Thompson stuck Parry McCluer’s Cyler Driscoll and then hung a 9-2 loss on Fort Chiswell’s Jeramia Caviness for third place.

David Mitchell also hauled home bronze. The 132-pounder started in the hole, losing 9-1 to Holston’s Merrick Buchanan. On the back of the bracket, Mitchell pinned Tucker Smiely of Buffalo Gap, Seth Ortiz of George Wythe and Ashby Russell of Lancaster to get himself to the third-place match. There he bested Fort Chiswell’s Jeremiah Cline 9-3.

At 113 pounds, J.T. Porter took fourth place. After opening with a quick pin over Gracin Carter of King and Queen Central, Porter fell by pin to Grundy’s Bryce Looney. In the consolations, Porter battled back with a 29 second pin over Brynan Hildebrand of Buffalo Gap. He then fell by pin to Holston’s Cole Depietro in the third-place bout.

Landon King secured fourth at 190 pounds.

After pinning Mathews’ Logan Kostyal, King fell by pin to Colby Yeago of Buffalo Gap. On the back o fthe bracket, King pinned Angle Archer of Cumberland in 20 seconds and stuck George Wythe’s Trey Sparks in the first period. King then hung a 7-3 decision on Jerry Sturgis of Northampton, setting up a re-match with Yeago, which went much the same as the first.

At 138 pounds, Eddie Sherlinki dropped an 11-5 match to Rural Retreat’s Chaz Penwright. Sherlinki then pinned Jude Louk of Buffalo Gap before falling 18-10 to Eastside’s Nick Ward.

Isabella Hill, the 144-pounder fell by pins to Cooper Simmons of Buffalo Gap and Braxton Freeman of Eastside.

At 165 pounds, Tanner Melton lost 11-1 to Rural Retreat’s Odell Storupe and fell by pinfall to Gavin Crouse of Galax.
