Friday at Chautauqua

Life’s a beach at the Chautauqua Festival on Friday, June 23.

At 10 a.m., beach crafts will take over the Upper Shelter for ages 5 and up. Cost is $8. At 11 a.m., $2 will get you into the making ice cream in a bag event in front of the upper shelter.

At 1 p.m., youth will show off their skills with the 4-H Share the Fun Talent Show at the Upper Shelter. Following that, at 2 p.m., will be a hula hoop contest, and a pet show behind the shelter at 3 p.m. Register for the pet show at register@event.

The sounds of beach tunes will begin at 6:30 p.m with Silk Groove Revue on the Main Stage. Based out of North Carolina, Silk Groove Revue brings the party, taking audiences through a journey from the 1950s to today, recreating the harmonies and showmanship of the Temptations, the Four Tops, The Manhattans and more. The Revue lineup has performed with The Drifters, the Coasters, The Platters and more.

The Catalinas

At 8:30 p.m., The Catalinas close out Beach night on the Main Stage. The Catalinas began their musical journey in 1957 at Myers Park High School in Charlotte, North Carolina, making this their 66th year of entertaining audiences across the region. The group’s mega hit “Summertime’s Callin’ Me” is the anthem of North Carolina and South Carolina beach-goers. The Catalinas were inducted into the NC Music Hall of Fame in 2013 and the Beach Music Hall of Fame in 1995.

Also on Friday, at St. Paul Methodist Church, the creative writing awards will be presented at 10 a.m.

Artisan of the Day for Friday is wood-turner Jeff Goodson. Working mostly in bowls and vases, Goodson creates wooden masterpieces from Grayson County.
