The Tide swelled on Saturday, leading Galax to hoist the Region 1C championship trophy on Pendleton Field.
The Maroon Tide edged the Maroons 17-14 to keep their season rolling and bringing to an end a memorable season for the boys from Wytheville. The win pits Galax against Honaker in the state semifinal contest with a shot at the state title game in Salem on the line.
GW got on the board first, taking a 7-0 win in the first frame thanks to a one-yard plunge from standout QB Tandom Smith.
Galax knotted the score in the second stanza when Tedruhn Tucker found the end zone at the end of an eight-yard run. Yanel Vera gave the Tide their first lead of the game before the break, booting in a 32-yard field goal.
In the third frame, George Wythe bounced back and nabbed a 14-10 lead when Brayden Rainey hauled in a 63-yard TD pass from Smith.
The Tide went ahead early in the fourth, as Tommy Jones connected with Colton Coomes on fourth a goal 15-yard scoring pass.
A tying field goal attempt by Thomas Mitchell bounced off the crossbars, dashing GW’s hopes.
