Malavolti to play basketball at Johnson & Wales

George Wythe senior Maria Malavolti will be hooping it up in Charlotte next season as a member of the Johnson & Wales Charlotte basketball team.

Malavolti, a 5-foot, 5-inch multisport standout for the Maroons and a native of Wytheville, was the fourth member of Johnson & Wales’ 2023 recruiting class.

A captain of the GW basketball team for the past two years, Malavolti has been selected to the all-district second team for the past three years. She has also played club basketball for the past six years, most recently for the NRV Storm. Malavolti was also a member of the George Wythe cross country state championship team in 2022 and earned all-district honors in soccer and volleyball.

The college says Malavolti, the daughter of Tommi and Noah Malavolti, plans to major in Business Administration.

She serves as senior class president at George Wythe and holds leadership posts in DECA, the Interact Club and the National Honor Society. In addition to being an honor roll students, she has made the dean’s list at Wytheville Community College.

Malavolti, who attended a camp at Johnson & Wales, said she knew right away “this is where I wanted to go to school.”

“Maria is a versatile player with a high basketball IQ,” said JWU basketball coach Jill Dunn. “She will be able to do multiple things for us on the court.”
