GW picks up big wins in Gatlinburg

Reed Kirtner’s 19 points propelled the Maroons to an 84-69 win over Pineville during the Smoky Mountain Christmas Classic in Gatlinburg.

Just behind him on the scoring line was Shane Huff, who plopped in 18 points.

The Maroon opened up a 14-point advantage in the first frame and stroked another 26 in the second to go to the half with a 52-36 advantage. GW held on to the lead finishing ahead 84-69.

Brayden Rainey took the starring role in an overtime 75-68 win over Lanier Christian Academy. Rainey stroked 23 to power the Maroons to the win.

On the girls’ side of the court, the GW crew picked up a 52-45 win, thanks to Makaylan Luttrell’s 18-point performance. Alana Malvolti chipped in 14 points in the victory.

The Maroons opened up a five-point lead in the first, but trailed by one at the half.

Luttrell fired in 17 points for the Lady Maroons in a showdown with Whitefield Academy, but it wasn’t enough as the Louisville, Kentucky, team claimed a 50-35 win.

In the Danny Jonas Memorial Christmas Tournaament at Fort Chiswell, Rural Retreat rolled over Eastern Montgomery, 51-16. Kailey Davidson and Talyn Moore led the Lady Indians with 12 points each.

The Indians followed up that win with a 46-11 win over Mount Airy, setting up a finals showdown with Fort Chiswell, who bested Radford.
