GW volleyball bests Bland, falls to Galax

After a rough start, dropping the first set 25-20, George Wythe found its footing and cruised to a 3-1 volleyball win over Bland County, taking down the Bears 25-19, 25-20 and 25-21.

Samara Sheffey served up a pair of aces as part of an 11-service point performance. She also came up with 15 digs in the victory. Maggie Minton hammered down five kills and had eight digs to go along with an ace. Sydney Leonard was tough at the net, sending down 10 kills on the night.

Hailey Patel served up three aces and dished out 11 assists. Patel also had a pair of kills and seven digs. Haley Faulkner finished with a pair of digs and six kills. Camille Wolfe had two digs in the win. McKenzie Tate stuffed the stat sheet with 10 digs, two kills and an ace.

Makenna Gilman notched one kill while Jasmine Faulkner had seven kills and three blocks. Maria Malavolti served up two aces, dished out nine assists, issued four kills, came up with five digs and had a block.

The JV Maroons won 2-0, 25-18, 25-19.

On Wednesday, the Maroons fell 3-1 to the Maroon Tide. Galax took the first set 25-12, the second 25-15 and the fourth 25-22. GW won the second stanza 25-20.

Sheffey served up four aces in the loss and recorded 15 digs. Minton had an ace, an assist, three kills and seven digs. Leonard wrapped up four kills and two blocks. Patel dished out 10 assists, served up three aces, a kill and seven digs. Hailey Faulkner finished with an assist and two kills.

Tate served up one ace, three kills and nine digs. Gilman knocked down three kills and a block, and Jasmine Faulkner finished with a pair of aces, five kills, a block and a dig. Malavolti recorded an ace, a kill, a pair of digs and seven assists.

The GW JV took a 2-0 win from the Tide.

Over in the Hogoheegee, the Warriors shut out the Cavaliers, taking down Holston 25-8, 25-21 and 25-15. Hannah Goodwin led the Chilhowie effot with a dozen digs and 10 kills. Mari Beth Bordwine had nine kills, four digs and four blocks, and Josie Sheets finished with 15 assists, six kills and six digs. Chloe Adams dished out 18 assists and had seven digs. Hannah Manns had seven kills in the win.

Northwood also had a strong showing against the Cavaliers, besting Holston 3-1. The Panthers took the final three frames 25-16, 25-22 and 25-22. Karlee Frye sent down 10 kills and came up with 10 digs in the win. Sidney Carter had 11 digs and nine kills and dished out eight assists. Olivia Briggs came up with 28 digs in the effort.

In a Southwest District matchup, Marion hammered Tazewell, taking a 3-0 win from the Bulldogs. Amber Kimberlin dished out 10 assists and six kills while Anna Hagy served up six aces and three kills.
