Maroons swipe huge win from Titans

A young George Wythe team shot the lights out from downtown on Friday night, punching the Maroons ticket to the VHSL state semifinals game set for Monday night.

From the jump, which GW controlled, the long ball made the difference at Friday’s game at Gate City High School.

The Maroon crew immediately started stroking threes and didn’t stop until the final buzzer revealed an 85-55 win over the Twin Springs Titans.

The Maroons dialed in 16 treys, ensuring another shot at a well-known foe on Monday. George Wythe will meet up against Auburn, the sixth of such meetings this season. The two teams have battled back and forth all season with GW winning three and Auburn claiming two, including the latest meeting at the regional finals

On Friday, George Wythe raced out to a 31-12 advantage in the first quarter.

Reed Kirtner led the onslaught, draining eight from beyond the arc for a game-high 26 points.

Fellow freshman David Goode netted 10 points. Treyvon Rainey chipped in 11, and Shane Huff drilled 13.
