Smyth officials rezone Sugar Grove business

Smyth Supervisors on Feb. 25 approved a rezoning of Sugar Grove’s Shirley’s Market from agricultural to commercial.

The move came after the board dispensed with the rules and after the planning commission, which was meeting concurrently, made the recommendation. Both votes were unanimous.

The Board of Supervisors also gave the OK for county administration to sign a memorandum of agreement with Smyth County’s recovery court. The court programs just finished a three-year grant and was award an additional three years of funding, provided the county agrees to be the fiscal agent.

In passing the matter, supervisors noted that the recovery court, which gives those struggling with addiction a chance at avoiding jail time, has been a good thing for the county.

In other news, Curtis Crawford updated supervisors on COVId-19 numbers, saying Smyth County in February was at a six-month low, logging just 99 new cases. He cautioned, though, that we aren’t out of the woods yet.

Still, other positive signs are around. Crawford said that Smyth County ranks eighth in the state in the number per 100,000 vaccinated, with 27 percent of the population having received at least one shot.
