Veterans Advisory Board named Festival of Trees winner

The Town of Abingdon is pleased to announce the winner of the second annual Festival of Trees. This community-driven initiative brought joy, creativity, and generosity to the holiday season. The event, held from November 19th – December 30th, featured 21 Christmas Trees decorated by local businesses and organizations, each representing the spirit of giving in the Abingdon community.

This year’s winner is the Veterans Advisory Board.

Instead of traditional voting methods, the Abingdon community cast their votes by donating pet food and supplies along with personal hygiene items for their favorite tree.  This year’s Festival of Trees gathered over 2,200 items, a 67% increase in donations compared to the previous year.

The donated items will be distributed to three deserving organizations: the Animal Defense League, Happy Tails Pet Rescue, and the United Way of Southwest Virginia. The personal hygiene items collected will be distributed to local middle and high schools for their Care Closets. This initiative recognizes the importance of supporting students who may face challenges accessing essential personal care items.

“The Abingdon Festival of Trees has become a cherished tradition in our community, and we are overwhelmed by the generosity shown by our residents and visitors this year,” said Amanda Pillion, Abingdon’s Mayor. “The spirit of giving was truly alive, and the impact of these donations will be felt by our furry friends, those in need, and our local students. We are grateful for the support and participation of everyone who made this event a success.”

The Town of Abingdon extends its appreciation to all participants and donors who made the Abingdon Festival of Trees a resounding success. The event brought holiday cheer and highlighted the caring and compassionate spirit that defines our wonderful community.
