Deer hunting season established in five parts of Progress Park

There will be an archery hunting event for white-tailed deer in five designated areas of Progress Park. Five randomly chosen hunters will be selected each week starting in October 2021 until January 2022 to hunt the area.

Hunters picked must be 18 years or older to apply for this hunt and may bring one guest 16 years or older. With the hunt starting in October, this allows 65 hunter duos to hunt the area for the first time. This hunt follows earn a buck rule, and a doe must be harvested prior to hunting an antlered deer.

Virginia Department of Wildlife and Recreation will be in charge of the random selection of the weekly hunters. In order to register, hunters can use https://quotahunt.gooutdoorsvirginia.com/Hunts/

The deadline for hunters to apply is Sept. 24.

“For years citizens have expressed interest in hunting in Progress Park,” stated Jamie Smith, Fort Chiswell District Supervisor.  “Wythe County Board of Supervisors is pleased to give these hunters an opportunity to archery hunt in these select locations and appreciate the partnership with Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources.  We are also appreciative of our agricultural lessee, G&G Livestock, for working with us on this endeavor.  We hope for a safe and successful hunt so that we may continue this quota hunt in the future.”

A pre-hunt orientation will be held by Wythe County Parks and Recreation and is required for all hunters and their guest attending.
